Yoga teaching styles and types of classes

Good Day Yogis,

It’s been a while since I have written a post so I felt like it would be a good idea to get back into it. I always have a lot on my mind and not sure what to write about first so I feel like I am going to start today with the basics.

I offer a variety of classes gentle, flow, power and the casual specialty classes - I get A LOT of questions about which class should I start with. I find it to be important to not only find the type of the class but getting acquainted with the instructors way of teaching too. There are countless yoga instructors out there teaching gentle yoga classes but the way each of us teach is unique - some are more vocal, while others like to demonstrate- some like to adjust, some like to guide. I teach from a very vocal platform which means I am strong with the verbal cues and less hands on adjustments. This has always been a personal preference of mine simply because I don’t want to move you physically into a place of discomfort with the adjustments, I would rather have you bring into your awareness how your body feels and follow what feels best for you. Always remember yoga should NEVER hurt, I remind my students of this often - most likely when yoga hurts it is because we are moving from a place of push and force- not ease and gentleness. This format of teaching has been serving the students well with the zoom (online) yoga classes as there is no options for hands on adjustments through the screen. So now that you know a little tiny-bit about me this may open you up to thinking about taking a class with me; so which one should you try, well gentle is most likely the best class to try out first. Let me tell you a little bit about it…Well it starts with a awakening of awareness of your breath, body and mind. Our mind tends to be the trickiest thing to tame so we work through our senses throughout class to bring our thoughts into more of a present state. It is in this state when we enter into flow, flow into the poses in whatever way that looks and feels to us that day. Throughout practice the 3 (breath, body and mind) merry together to create a melodic organic connection of which you may haven’t felt in a long time- some refer to this connection as love, some peace others balance. This class is open to everybody of all levels of practice. There are no pre-requisite required but a letting go of the ego is a must.

I hope this helps out to those of you who have been on the fence about trying out a yoga class. I am more than happy to connect with you individually as well for more guidance.

Until we meet again…

Namaste,

Tarah
